Research Activities
Brief Description including objectives:
The technology trends across the globe are pointing towards Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp) to make intelligent devices, all pervasive, and effectively invisible to the user. UbiComp has potential applications in several sectors such as Mobile Computing, High Performance Computing, Network Security, Agriculture, Surveillance and empowering the common man to improve the quality of life. With the increasing penetration of mobile communication and Internet, India does offer a great market for UbiComp and its proliferation. UbiComp is a computing era that converges several domains and technologies to provide the goals of pushing computation to the background, thereby functioning calmly to perform the mundane task more intelligently. It involves expertise from various technologies which includes:
Embedded Computing
Mobile Computing
Wireless Technologies
Human Computer Interface
Sensor Networks
Web Technologiess
Secure Computing
Grid Computing
In view of the above, this project aims to pursue Research and Development (R&D) to address issues and challenges in the multi-disciplinary areas of UbiComp and create knowledge centres for dissemination of the expertise gained. R&D focus is on specific domains of UbiComp such as sensing and actuation, context awareness, real-life applications, and security & trust, mobile computing and embedded systems. The project aims to integrate the research work in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) into an Adaptive Framework that would facilitate faster development of WSN applications. Another major objective of the project is to provide a framework for hosting solutions to various security and trust issues in an UbiComp environment. The UbiComp project also aims at significant efforts in research of blending the UbiComp and Grid Computing (GrUb Computing) domains to facilitate anytime, anywhere learning that would integrate e-Learning and m-Learning thus leading to u-Learning environment.
Objectives of the Project:
Establishing state-of-the-art laboratory and Knowledge Centre for Ubiquitous Computing at C-DAC and setting up collaborations with National and International Organizations in area of Research and Applications of Ubiquitous Computing.
Addressing Security and Privacy Issues in Ubiquitous Computing Networks.
An experimental setup to blend the Grid and Ubiquitous (GrUb) Computing at GARUDA Grid nodes situated at C-DAC Centres.
An Adaptive Framework for design and development of WSN applications with customized options for Routing, Localization, Time Synchronization and Security protocols.
Design, Development and Integration of Ubicomp System Components (Hardware, Software, Wireless, Sensors & Actuators, HCI, Mobile Computing and Middleware) for building credible Ubicomp applications.
Launching and maintaining website for Ubicomp Research and publishing a e-News letter on Ubicomp.
To cooperate and collaborate with National and International Institutions and Research Laboratories.
To organize study programmes, Lectures symposia, International conferences, exhibitions and similar promotional activities related to Ubicomp.
